Remembering Sonia Rykiel

"You have to be luxurious nude. It's difficult to move in the nude in front of a mirror. It's much easier to move when you're dressed. But if you can walk around in the nude easily in front of your man, if you can be luxurious in the nude, then you've really got it." Sonia Rykiel

At 86, the fashion world has lost one of its a celebrated pioneers and leaders. Sonia Rykiel. Dubbed the "Queen of Knits" revolutionising the sweater as an artful fashion staple, with many of her iconic pieces on display in museums. She dressed women for their bodies; wool and thick fabrics, once the farthest consideration from sex appeal, draped the female form with new interest. Vibrant stripes, pop-phrases and colours. She rejected linings, embraced exposed seams, and defiantly decreed that the sweater should be worn against naked skin.

"People said making clothes inside out was not proper. I disagreed, because clothes that are inside out are as beautiful as a cathedral." Sonia Rykiel

A rebell, a firey red head inspiring a cult of strong and fashion independent women, Rykiel's flagship boutique on Boulevard Saint Germain in Paris became a fashionable nucleus of the left bank from which was born the multi-million dollar, global and family brand; her legacy carried on by her daughter and granddaughter...

"It's not true that clothes look better on skinny girls; what counts is the attitude." Sonia Rykiel

"Being one step ahead of a fashion trend is not so important to me. What matters is to always forge ahead." Sonia Rykiel
