Louis Vuitton: Volez, Voguez, Voyagez

This winter, the Grand Palais in Paris has been turned into a time portal into a time tarnished world of travel, leather luxuries, and the art of craftsmanship above all else for Louis Vuitton:  Volez, Voguez, Voyagez.

For most, Louis Vuitton ignites visions of decadent runway collections, clothes to rival your rent...or 5 times it... and a sea of ever evolving–and ever copied–logo-stamped leather goods. But how many actually know the origin story of this legendary and innovative brand? At the beginning, Louis Vuitton was the emblem of luxury travel goods, with nary an expertly tailor cut or laser printed ensemble in sight. In fact, the brand only launched it's ready to wear (Pre-à-Porter) collection with the appointent of Marc Jacobs as creative director in 1997.

But at its root, is a a 16 year old boy who decided to change his life and the world of luxury goods by becoming a trunk maker. He transformed the leather good into an object of luxury and craftsmanship, used brilliant graphic design and an unprecedented use of logos, and took the craftsmanship to new discoveries, even revolutionising luggage locks with an ingenious closing system, turning them from trunk into treasure chest.

The brand's latest retrospective at the Grand Palais is the product of the brilliant collaboration between Olivier Saillard, one of fashion's most celebrated historians, fashion performance artists, and director of Paris's Palais Galliera Musée de la Mode; along with the enchanting imagination and ability of renowned opera director, Robert Carsen, to transport us to far away worlds.

The result was ground breaking in the fashion industry's growing transcendence into the static world of galleries and museums. The challenges of translating the living, moving world of fashion and their brands into traditional art world setting can easily be fallen short, but Saillard and Carsen's achievement at the Grand Palais was beyond success.

It transported us back in time to the origin of the Vuitton brand in a whirlwind of traveling sets and themes that left us thirsting for the time lost world world of luxury and craftsmanship inhabited by the luxury trunk-maker during the leather conglomerate's founding in Paris in 1854.

Carsen and Saillard guided us through the evolution of the brand beginning with the intial sketches and signature trunks which expand into entire dressings, or opened into secret compartments protecting colognes and luxury shaving kits. It was a feast for the graphic design inclined eye, displaying the many manifestations of their logo and signature prints along with an emphasis on the craftsmanship behind details such as the leather work and lock making.

Above all, the exhibition fed our imaginations of a former time in fashion and history, carrying us from the rise of aviation, expansion of travel through luxury trains across the continents, and distant voyages  on ships traversing the ocean and into the deserts of Africa.

A brilliant collaboration  of creative minds with the history and artistry of an unparalleled brand, Louis Vuitton's latest retrospective has set a new standard for fashion world exhibitions.
