The Anatomical Dream World of Illustrator Juan Osorno

For Colombian illustrator Juan Osorno, the starting point of any of his drawings begins with the word itself: "draw." His surreal astro-anatomical illustrations are not only an expression of the imagination but of the very experience of drawing. Faces that cave into landscapes and galaxies, anatomically precise studies of a hand that spill into a cascade of blood vein-like roots... Osorno's work is imbued with the scientific precision of botanical drawings and an almost mathematical examination of perspective and space within the two-dimensional paper palette.

There is a mystique to Juan Osorno's illustrations, suggesting that his work is not only a study of the body and celestial beings but the act of drawing holds a life force of its own; with an energy of connectivity running through every element from artist to pencil and every reflective act of creativity in between.

I always thought that on paper anything can happen, and my job as an artist is to make those things visible.

CM: How would you describe your style?

My drawings often have a surreal component that makes them curious and strange. I always try to tell small stories; for each viewer generate their own questions and even answers .I always thought that on paper anything can happen and my job as an artist is to make those things visible.

I really do not think I've yet found my personal style , I think it's an issue that comes with experience and I feel I 'm just discovering characteristics that make me different from other artists work. A lot of people think I am pretty old, but I am only 22 years old.

I could say I'm a very traditional artist. Generally I only work with paper and pencil. I really enjoy working with my hands while I'm locked up for hours in my workshop.

CM: What inspires your work?

I am a big fan of scientific illustration. Many features present in this type of art nourish my daily work. I really like the didactic and rigorous way in which this form of illustration describes a particular issue. An important example of this is the look at human anatomy and the function of the body, very common element in my drawings.

In opposition to the scientific and accurate view of scientific illustration it is the surreal and mystical interest allowing my drawings are transformed into small anomalies. This feature finds inspiration in different areas such as reading and fantastic stories, my favorite those of Jules Verne and Edgar Allan Poe. In other cases I look artis that I like and that also use a surreal component in his work, some of them are José Antonio Suárez Londoño (also from Medellin), Rene Magritte and Michaël Borremans .

CM: How do your drawings usually begin?

Always begin when a small and abstract idea arises from a subject that catches my attention, maybe something I see, read or just pass through my mind for some reason. These epiphanies (as I like to call them) come in any time and place, usually when I'm not in my workshop. Then I have write them to remember them when I get home. Then I make a reference image search on the web trying to find one picture that fits whit what I have imagined before. These searches can take hours while I find the right image. So, when I have the correct picture I can start drawing.

CM: How do you market your work?

Promote my work is very important, especially because I am a young, emerging artist who needs to give visibility to my projects not only in Colombia, my country, but also in the world.

My first opportunity to promote my work came when I was working as an assistant for the Colombian artist Edwin Monsalve, soon he noticed my ability to draw and recommended me to his dealer, who likes my work and began to sell very successfully. That was several years ago, but it motivated me to take my work more seriously.

Shortly after I created several digital portfolios, the most successful to date is Behance, every day I am amazed at the amount of people visiting my job and leaving positive feedback. This has allowed some galleries, magazines or collectors to contact me, so I always kept producing.

Are also important exhibitions and fairs, many opportunities have emerged to show my work directly. You never know who may be watching your work, so it is vital to try to be always active.

I currently work with a couple of dealers and with a gallery, but I also want to continue promoting my work independently, I have always enjoyed

CM: What are you working on now? Next?

There are so many things coming.

First I hope to soon get my title as Master of Arts.

I have a couple of exhibitions in Colombia next year and possibly another in France in which I am working rigorously because it is the first time my drawings will be exhibited in another country. That makes me very happy.

I really never wonder what's next. Every opportunity that come to me is always a challenge that I am willing to accept. I think I just started my career and everything can happen, but I'm sure that whatever is to come will finds me drawing.
