Inside Haute Couture Ateliers
Do you really know Haute Couture? To begin, it has become grossly overused and butchered in fashion terminology. To truly be Haute Couture is an honour reserved for only a select group of Fashion designers. Haute Couture originated from the ateliers of French designers during the mid-19th century with luxe garments custom fitted for their elite clientele. Today, Haute Couture has since evolved into an all out and over the top expression of designers' craftsmanship, skill and imaginations in a luxe showcase of the fashion house and to create hype for the pre-à-porter collections to come. These clothes are not meant for every day, but to inspire; turning fashion into an art form of radical expression during the collections' yearly 8-10 minute showcase down the runway. And to make it into the official roster of Haute Couture, designers must follow very specific design qualifications such as the number of hours spent on each piece and a scrupulous assessment process by La Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.
