Fleur Elise Creates Everlasting Roses

The rose is the universal symbol of romance and compassion, given by lovers, to the sick, to the deserving, and to simply spoil and self-indulge. But roses, like all living things have one fatal flaw: they will eventually dry up and die. Sonam of Fleur Elise London, has discovered the elixir of youth and managed to give living roses everlasting life, and with that, imbue their symbol of romance with everlasting meaning. Using natural preservatives, Fleur Elise roses stay as fresh and colorful as the moment they are cut...forever. We collaborated with the London flower magicians for the launch of Mapping Creatively, and interviewed Sonam to find out more about the magical process of floral eternal youth and what a rose means to her.

"Whichever angle you look at it from, the rose is just extraordinary, and a piece of art in itself [...] I don't think I'm alone when I say I could stare at a bunch of roses for hours on end." Sonam Fleur Elise

CM: Why did you decide to pursue a career in flowers?
I spent my early childhood in Kenya, which is renowned for it’s beautiful roses, and my fondest memories were of these gorgeous roses which my mother used to buy weekly that filled our home. I’ve always had a fascination with them, and this was cemented further when I became an interior designer. I find that flowers have a unique ability to lift and brighten any space, they really are intrinsic to interior design. However, one of the biggest challenges we faced with show homes was having to change the flowers on a weekly basis, which was time consuming, messy,  and quite expensive. It was then that I had the idea to combine my two passions - design and roses, which culminated in me and my sister starting Fleur Elise, which specialises in everlasting roses. Homes are very important to people, and we wanted to create the perfect home accessory.

CM: Why the rose? Why not immortalize other flowers as well? If you were to which would it be?
Aesthetically speaking, I think the rose is the most beautiful flower to look at, it also has a very rich history compared to a lot of other flowers. They have been found throughout all the different periods in both artwork, fashion and interior design. They mean a lot of different things to different people, and it’s the one flower which everyone is familiar with and can relate to. The rose has the ability to express a wide range of emotions from apologising to expressing your love. It is also the most popular flower and usually people's preferred choice for special occasions such as birthdays, mothers day, and valentines day.

We are looking at immortalising other flowers and are currently working on Hydrangeas. We believe that hydrangeas are also very striking flowers and they compliment roses perfectly.

CM: What is the secret recipe to preserving your roses?
That’s a good question, however it would not be a secret if we told you!

CM: Each of your colors and collections holds a story. Which is your favorite and why?
My personal favourite is the Everlasting Love arrangement. It was actually the first arrangement we created and so it does have a special place in our hearts. I find the red roses, with the green leaves very striking and this is one arrangement that goes well with absolutely any colour scheme and any interior – both modern and classic. We consider our arrangements to be classed as home accessories,  and this is the perfect example of one that works well in any space.

CM: Aside from love, what does a rose symbolize to you?
I would have to say that it symbolises beauty and perfection. Whichever angle you look at it from, the rose is just extraordinary, and a piece of art in itself.  I work with them on a daily basis yet their beauty and flawlessness never ceases to amaze me. I don't think I'm alone when I say I could stare at a bunch of roses for hours on end.
