Anish Kapoor, Versailles and a Giant Vagina
When we got wind that there was a giant “Queen’s Vagina” sculpture at Versailles, we had to check it out for ourselves… Mirror distortion artist Anish Kapoor is taking a page from Paul McCarthy’s playbook… remember that 80 foot suggestive work of art entitled “Tree 2014” (which we all knew was really a butt plug), which he installed smack dab in the middle of Place Vendôme in Paris?
Well, Anish is taking it even further. The British-Indian sculptor has erected an installation entitled “The Dirty Corner” unceremoniously known as “The Queen’s Vagina” by everyone else.
The gaping black opening of the giant metal sculpture faces directly at the Chateau de Versailles, as if the Queen of Cake herself were opening her legs to the court. Comedic, controversial, and totally awesome.
This wasn’t Kapoor’s only sculpture. He inserted his signature mirror distorting creations in very particular places around the palace and gardens; one directly in front of the palace itself, flipping it’s reflection upside down.
From Marie Antoinette’s nether regions to putting the Sun King’s palace of overindulgence and debt upside down, this open-air exhibition was the ultimate in subversion art. Rabelais would have been proud.
We loved this exhibition, if not for the upheaval and commotion it’s caused around France. Anything creative that stirs up the norm and gets people hot and bothered is okay in our books.
