Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty

Alexander McQueen: L'Enfant Sauvage of the Fashion Industry, Tragic Genius, British Talent.
The Fashion Exhibition of the Century, Victoria & Albert, London 2015.

"I think there is a beauty in everything. What 'normal' people would perceive as ugly, I can usually see something of beauty in it."–Alexander McQueen

Finally managed to make it to the Alexander McQueen exhibition in London (After missing it by literally a day during it's New York debut at the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute) and wowww... an emotional and  immersive journey through a labyrinth of rooms–each with their own music–displaying McQueen's creations in ornate glass boxes, giant shelves, and insane use of mirroring with truly mind blowing installation design.

"I want to be honest about the world we live in, and sometimes my political persuasions come through in my work. Fashion can be really racist, looking at the clothes of other cultures as costumes....That's mundane and it's old hat. Let's break down some barriers."–Alexander McQueen

We fell HARD for this exhibition, and for this Creative. And now we only want to live out the rest of our lives dressed in Alexander McQueen's Edwardian Haute-goth space bird creations. And not to mention the myriad of surreal accessories by Shaun Leane and haute-milliner Philip Tracey.

"Animals...fascinate me because you can find a force, an energy, a fear that also exists in sex"–Alexander McQueen

Starting with his graduation collection through to his final collection, presented in 2010, after his suicide which has left the fashion world in a permanent mourning. From "East End Yob" to one of the greatest designers the industry has known.

The exhibition showed his inspirations from London punk, and old fashion nobility to Scottish and Russian cultures, and a strong dose of beasts and aliens.

"Women should look like women. A piece of cardboard has no sexuality"–Alexander McQueen

One of our favourite things about Lee that shone right through? He couldn't give two fucks. He was an anarchist with a penchant for the divine. He was a punk, and loved beauty. Rough yet delicate, just like his creations. And a beautiful freak and a genius above all.

P.S. When Lee was working as an apprentice On Savile Row, he sewed "I am a cunt" into the hem of a handmade suit for Prince Charles.

God Save McQueen!
